Our price guide
| Procedure | Typical cost in Ireland | What moves the price |
|---|---|---|
| Gastric sleeve | €6,500 to €10,000 | The hospital, the surgeon's fee, the nights in hospital and how much aftercare is included |
| Gastric bypass | €7,500 to €12,600 | A longer, more complex operation than a sleeve, and the follow-up included |
| Mini gastric bypass | Quoted after assessment | Fewer Irish surgeons offer it. Ask for a written quote that lists the aftercare |
| Gastric balloon | €3,400 to €4,900 | Swallowable or endoscopic, how long it stays in, and how long the support programme runs |
| Revision surgery | Quoted after tests | What the first operation was, scar tissue, and the tests needed before surgery |
| Gastric band | Rarely offered now | Few Irish surgeons fit new bands; removal and conversion are quoted case by case |
| Public, through the HSE | No hospital charge | Free at the point of care as a public patient. The wait can run to years |
Typical self-pay prices in Ireland. Your quote depends on your assessment; ask what it includes before you compare.
What's included
- Consultations with the surgeon and the dietitian, and often a psychologist
- Tests before surgery: bloods, and sometimes a scan or a camera test
- The operation: surgeon, anaesthetist, theatre and staplers
- One to three nights in hospital
- Follow-up visits and dietitian reviews, at least for the first year in most packages
What pushes it up or down
- Up: a longer stay, a more complex operation, revision surgery, more aftercare in the package
- Up: tests or treatment for other conditions before surgery
- Down: 20% tax relief on what you pay yourself
- Down: health insurance, if your plan lists the operation and you meet its criteria
- Not in most quotes: vitamins for life, and any excess skin surgery later

What a quote should include
A self-pay quote for a gastric sleeve in Ireland is usually a package. Before you compare two prices, check that both cover the same things:
- The assessment. Consultations with the surgeon, a dietitian and often a psychologist, plus blood tests and any scans or a camera test (gastroscopy) the team asks for.
- The operation. The surgeon's and anaesthetist's fees, theatre costs and the stapling equipment, which is a real part of the price.
- Your stay. Usually one to three nights in hospital. The HSE says most people leave hospital one to three days after bariatric surgery.
- Aftercare. Dietitian reviews and follow-up visits, at least for the first year. The HSE expects follow-up at a specialist clinic for at least two years.
- What happens if something goes wrong. Ask whether a return to theatre or a longer stay is covered, or charged on top.
A lower price that leaves out aftercare isn't cheaper. You'll pay for those visits separately, or go without them.
The costs people forget
- Vitamins and minerals for life. Everyone takes supplements after a sleeve, for good. The HSE says to take them for the rest of your life as prescribed.
- Blood tests. Checks on your vitamin and mineral levels at every follow-up, then yearly with your GP.
- Protein drinks and soft food for the first weeks.
- Time off work. Many people with desk jobs go back after two to three weeks. A physical job needs longer: one NHS bariatric unit advises at least six weeks before heavy lifting.
- Excess skin. Large weight loss can leave loose skin. Removing it is a separate operation, usually treated as cosmetic, so insurance rarely pays and tax relief doesn't normally apply.
Ways to pay less
Tax relief: 20% back
Weight loss surgery to treat obesity is medical treatment by a registered doctor, so it fits Revenue's rules for health expenses. You claim relief at 20% on what you paid and weren't refunded. On a €10,000 sleeve that's €2,000 back. How to claim tax relief.
Health insurance
Many Irish hospital plans cover a list of bariatric operations once you meet the medical criteria, and the insurer approves it first. If you had obesity when you joined, a pre-existing condition waiting period of up to five years can apply. Health insurance and bariatric surgery.
The HSE
As a public patient you pay no hospital charge for the operation. The catch is the wait: the public service is small, with around 200 operations a year. The HSE route and waiting times.
What about going abroad?
Packages in Turkey and elsewhere are often advertised at less than half the Irish price. The difference is real money, and so are the trade-offs: the HSE's cross-border schemes don't cover Turkey, travel costs don't qualify for tax relief when the operation is available here, and your lifelong follow-up still has to happen in Ireland. Questions people ask
How much is a gastric sleeve in Ireland?
About €6,500 to €10,000 if you pay yourself, for the assessment, the operation, a short hospital stay and some aftercare. Quotes vary with the hospital, the surgeon and how much follow-up is included.
Is a gastric sleeve cheaper than a gastric bypass?
Usually, yes. A sleeve is about €6,500 to €10,000 and a bypass about €7,500 to €12,600, because a bypass is a longer, more complex operation.
Can I pay for a gastric sleeve in instalments?
Some hospitals and clinics offer payment plans or work with lenders. Ask the clinic. If you borrow, remember that tax relief is on what you pay, so keep every receipt.
Does the price include the consultation?
Some clinics charge for the first consultation and some take it off the price if you go ahead. The clinic tells you before you book anything.
Is a gastric sleeve free on the HSE?
There's no hospital charge as a public patient. The HSE's public bariatric service is small, so the wait from referral to surgery can run to years.
