Gastric sleeve recovery, week by week

From the hospital bed to the first anniversary: what most people go through, and when.

The short answer

Most people leave hospital one to three days after a gastric sleeve, eat liquids for the first days, soft food until about week twelve, and go back to a desk job after two to three weeks. Heavy lifting waits until about six weeks. Most of the weight comes off in the first six to twelve months. Your own team's plan comes first.

  • 1 to 3 daysin hospital
  • 2 to 3 weeksto a desk job, for many
  • 6 weeksbefore heavy lifting
  • Week 12back to a balanced diet

Where should the clinic contact you?

One Irish clinic gets your enquiry, nobody else. They contact you to arrange a consultation with a surgeon. Nothing is booked unless you say yes.

Thank you

Your enquiry is on its way to one Irish clinic. Here's what happens next:

  1. Today. We pass your answers to one clinic whose bariatric surgeons are on the Medical Council's Specialist Register. No one else gets them.
  2. Usually within two working days. The clinic rings or texts you to arrange a first consultation.
  3. At the consultation. A surgeon and the team assess you, explain your options and give you a written quote. Nothing is booked unless you say yes.

Changed your mind? Email hello@gastricsleeve.ie and we'll delete your enquiry and tell the clinic.

The timeline

  • In hospital: day 0 to day 3Up and walking the same day. Sips of water, then clear fluids and protein drinks. Pain relief, and often blood-thinning injections to take home. The HSE says most people leave one to three days after the operation.
  • Week 1Liquids, including protein-rich drinks, in small sips through the day. Short walks several times a day. Tiredness is normal. Take your medicines and injections exactly as prescribed.
  • Weeks 2 to 4Soft, low-fibre, high-protein food in tiny portions: yogurt, scrambled egg, minced meat, milk. Many people with desk jobs go back after two to three weeks. One NHS bariatric unit's policy is no driving for two weeks; check with your team and your insurer.
  • Weeks 4 to 6Longer walks and light exercise. No lifting heavier than a kettle of water for six weeks, the same unit advises. Physical jobs usually wait until at least six weeks.
  • Weeks 6 to 12Still soft food, slowly widening. Building muscle-strengthening exercise in, as the HSE recommends. Follow-up visits with the dietitian.
  • From week 12A gradual return to a healthy, balanced diet with fibre, fruit and vegetables, in much smaller portions than before.
  • Months 3 to 12The fastest weight loss. Blood tests to check vitamins and minerals. Clothes, sleep and energy often change quickly.
  • 12 to 18 monthsWeight usually settles. The HSE says some regain is common from here and isn't a sign of failure. If you want a baby, the HSE advises waiting 12 to 18 months after surgery.

When to ring the team

Ring your surgical team straight away, day or night, if you have a fever, worsening tummy pain, a fast heartbeat, breathlessness, pain or swelling in a calf, vomiting that won't stop, or you can't keep fluids down. These can be signs of a leak, a clot or a blockage, and they need urgent care. Before you go home, make sure you know which number to ring.

Getting home and flying

Someone needs to drive you home. If you live a long way from the hospital, plan the trip with stops to walk, because sitting still raises the risk of clots. If you're thinking of flying soon after surgery, ask your surgeon first. The Department of Foreign Affairs notes that some airlines ask for a fit-to-fly certificate after an operation.

The part nobody sees

Food plays a big part in most lives, and losing the way you used to eat can feel like a loss, even when you wanted it. It's one reason a psychologist is part of the team. Use them, and lean on the support network the HSE advises building before surgery.
